Born in Chiba, Japan, violinist Ryo Koyama studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating with a Bachelor of Music (BMus) with First Class Honours in 2019. He went on to complete his Master of Music (MMus) with Distinction at the same institution. Over the course of his training, he has studied the violin under Laurent Riquier, Mami Teshigawara, and Richard Deakin. He has also performed in masterclasses led by world-renowned virtuosos and conductors, including Maxim Vengerov, Nicola Benedetti, and Vladimir Ashkenazy, deepening his technical mastery and musical expression from diverse perspectives.

Since his student days, he has maintained an active performing career as a soloist and chamber musician across the UK and Europe. A central pillar of his artistic vision is the exploration of British music; he is deeply passionate about introducing and promoting the country's repertoire, having performed violin concertos by E.J. Moeran and William Walton as a soloist. During his time at the Academy, he was a member of the Florizel String Quartet, which was awarded the prestigious Wolfe Wolfinsohn String Quartet Prize for outstanding chamber music performance. He is also highly engaged in the field of contemporary music; following his participation in the London Sinfonietta Academy in 2022, he has performed in various festival productions, including the Tête à Tête Opera Festival and Folkestone New Music, dedicating himself to premiering new works and mastering contemporary performance techniques.

As an orchestral musician, he participated in the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s (CBSO) Career Accelerator Scheme in 2023, joining the orchestra on its tour of Japan. He has further refined his orchestral expertise by playing with several of the UK’s leading ensembles, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO), and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO).

Alongside his concert engagements, he is deeply dedicated to researching acoustic effects and their historical context, with a particular specialization in violin mutes. This academic pursuit of the instrument’s physical properties and historical evolution goes beyond mere technical execution, bringing a distinctive, intellectual depth to his own musical interpretations. Currently based in both Japan and the UK, he works as a freelance violinist, maintaining a broad and versatile repertoire that spans from the classical era to contemporary masterpieces.
